Outdoor Fireplace & Fire Pit Design Trends for Luxury St. Louis Homes

Modern stone outdoor fireplace with contemporary seating

The outdoor fireplace has moved from "nice to have" to the single most requested feature on West County hardscape projects. A few patterns are showing up consistently on the estate-scale projects going in this year.

Larger Openings, Simpler Mantels

The trend has shifted away from ornate, heavily-detailed mantels toward a wider firebox opening with a clean, minimal stone surround — the flame itself is the feature, not the masonry around it. A larger opening also throws more usable heat into the seating area, which matters for three-season use in Missouri.

Linear Gas Features Alongside Wood-Burning

More homeowners are specifying a secondary linear gas feature — a low fire trough or ribbon burner — near a seating or dining area, separate from a primary wood-burning fireplace used for gatherings. It gives instant ambiance for a quiet weeknight without the commitment of building a full fire.

Stone That Matches the House, Not the Patio

The strongest-looking projects pull the fireplace's stone veneer from the same family as the home's existing exterior stone or brick, rather than treating the patio as a separate design language. It reads as an extension of the architecture instead of a backyard add-on.

Built-In Wood Storage as a Design Element

Rather than a separate log rack, wood storage is increasingly built directly into the fireplace base as a niche — functional, but designed to look intentional rather than utilitarian.
